I am nervous.
Stupid Leah had the BRIGHT IDEA to host a Toastmasters Open House for our whole company (huge) and have our CEO as the guest speaker. And guess who got stuck being the person leading the session? ME.
Back up a bit here. I've been in Toastmasters since 2011. Toastmasters is an international organization that aims to help people develop public speaking and leadership skills. They have a ton of clubs all around the world. At my company, we have three different clubs! Our company believes in the value of Toastmasters - they even pay for their employees to be members!
This year, I'm the club president! Super cool, right? Last year, our club president didn't even come to one meeting all year, so needless the say the leadership was lacking. I am looking to become a better leader, so I volunteered. One of the things I want to accomplish is attracting new members, and what's a better way to attract new members than to shout from the rooftops (and put flyers on every floor of your building) to tell people about how great this organization is.
Also, our CEO was in Toastmasters for like, 20 years. He credits his ability to speak to groups and be a great communicator to being a member. Oh, and I have a crush on him. He is the cutest guy, and so sweet. I've never talked to him in real life and my only near encounter was when I was in the elevator on the way to the parking garage with him and spilled my purse all over.
SO anyways, Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. I will be leading a mock Toastmasters meeting. The theme is Leadership and the whole point is to talk about what leadership is, what traits good leaders have, and how to become a better leader. And then we lead in to Toastmasters, because it is such a great opportunity to meet new people in your company while growing your communication and leadership skills.
My boss just wrote in my 6 month review that one thing I should be really confident with is presenting in front of large groups. So I guess this is the best way to prepare, right?
Eeeeek.
Good luck! You'll do great!
