Dog park essentials

My dog has a lot of energy. He's a border collie mix (not sure what he's mixed with) and they say border collie's have LOTS of energy, because they are herding dogs! John takes the dog on at least 2 1 - 2 mile walks per day, and I try to keep him active by playing ball in the yard or bringing him to the dog park.

I feel fortunate that there are an abundance of dog parks within miles of our house! Lately, one of my favorites has a small fenced in area. It's about 4 - 5 times the size of our (small) backyard. It's the perfect size to throw a ball to Buddy, and it's even better when we get the whole thing to ourselves.

People say having a dog is like a having a child, and I think having a child would be 100x more work. It must be exhausting. Just having the dog is exhausting!

I thought I'd share my wealth of knowledge (sarcasm) about what I've found helpful to have on hand when Buddy and I go to the dog park.

1. ChuckIt - Buddy LOVES to chase after the ball. The ChuckIt keeps my arm from getting tired and throws the ball so much further and faster than I ever could.

2. Treats - We have a picky dog but he LOVES the IAMS Shakeables. Having a treat on hand is helpful, in case you need to get his attention.

3. Plastic bags - to clean up poop. Just being real here.

4. Leash  - It's helpful to always have your leash handy but especially at the dog park when it's to scoop your pal up.

5. Water (for you AND your four-legged pal) - After all that running and chasing the ball, Fido is going to be thirsty! And for some reason, watching him take a refreshing drink makes me thirsty, too.

6. Bowl - Most dog parks have a bowl (or five), so it's courtesy to bring some water to leave in an old milk jug. Just in case, pack a bowl you don't really care about.

7. Bug spray - depending on location, this will be helpful. The small park we like to go to is carved right out of the woods, and it's really, really buggy.

8. Tote - what better way to keep everything together than a nice bag? Find an old canvas tote or a reusable bag you can buy from any grocery store. That way, you can have all these things in the car so you're ready to go on a moment's notice!

So there you have it! A list of some items to have on hand for the dog park. Now, go forth and play fetch!
